The Neumann U47
The Holy Grail of Vintage
Tube Microphones.
The U47 mic setting new standards
for audio excellence and introduced in 1948... built
by George Neumann and had the Telefunken VF-14M tube
that offered the perfect high quality sound that
Neumann was looking for. In the early 50's a brand
new U47 in box sold for $ 390. However, the VF14
tubes were very limited and by the 1970's had
completly disappeared, so the
late production U47s had the RCA Nuvistor
13CW4 tubes, which were retrofitted to replace the
VF-14M tubes with poor results. Modifications to the
U47 often turn the classic U47 into no more than a
decorative show piece. It is nearly impossible to
find a VF14 for sale unless you’re ready to pay
crazy money top dollar for it .
A 28 mm gold sputtered PVC diaphragm with a dual
membrane design... The U47 Capsule the M7 was
original used in early U47, U48 and the M49. The M7
capsule has the diaphragm directly glued to the
body. The K47 capsule Neumann used in the later
models of the U47 have a flat ring with screws to
mount the diaphragm.
Famous for it's big warm tone... The U47 is
responsible majority of classic recordings from the
50's, 60's and 70's. With a large proximity effect
that moving closer to the mic increases bass
response, and has a characteristic pek around 8 KHz.
All bow to the King of microphones...The Holy Grail
of Vintage Tube Microphones...
